Evaluation for Learning Disabilities
Farmington Public Schools (FPS) will be using a Patterns of Strengths and Weaknesses model to evaluate students for eligibility under the category of Learning Disabled (LD). The District must use this model until it has a Response to Intervention (RTI) model implemented in full at each school. Currently, FPS is developing its RTI model and will transition from Patterns of Strengths and Weaknesses to RTI in the future (anticipated to be no sooner than 2011-12). The Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education no longer permit reliance on only the severe discrepancy model (discrepancy between IQ and achievement scores). If you have questions about this new process, please see your child’s special education staff or contact the Special Education Services department at 248.489.3388.
Severe Cognitive Impairment and Severe Multiple Impairments programs operate a minimum of 1,150 hours of instruction with no breaks greater than ten consecutive days of pupil instruction.
