- Only one transfer request may be submitted per student, per year. A complete application is required for each student.
- It is desirable that a student who transfers pursuant to the Internal Transfer program remains at the selected school for that educational level (i.e., grades K-5, 6-8, and 9-12). However, upon request, an Internal Transfer student will be allowed to return to their home school at the end of the semester. Once returned to their home school, a student is ineligible to apply for Internal Transfer at that level again.
- Sibling preference in any school, applies only if one sibling is already in attendance within the school of choice. Thus, the preference is ONLY in effect when siblings will be attending the same school concurrently, and only if requested schools are open to Intra-District Transfer.

What People Are Saying About FPS Young 5s
From Our Parents
I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for the Young Fives program and its lasting impact on my son. Having a later birthday and being an only child, we felt it was important to give him the extra time to develop emotionally, and I can confidently say that decision was priceless. When we initially enrolled him, I was the parent who thought, “My child is smart, he’ll excel”—after all, that’s what daycare had always told us. However, I quickly learned that being smart and thriving in a classroom setting are two different things. I was nervous yet hopeful, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. —WT
From Our Students
It felt really good to be a Y5 because we did fun things. And I wanted to go to school just like my sister. I didn’t know all the words, but now I know them and that is why I am really good at my work. —BP
I liked being a Y5. I like to be at school and I like to do all those fun things with my teacher. My teacher taught me how to be a kindergartner. —JJ
From Our Teachers
A Young 5 student came in with a strong foundation and has taken off quickly in Kindergarten. She is a leader in my
classroom, and her confidence shows through in whole group and independent work time. The routines and expectations and “how to do school” are much stronger because she was in Y5 last year. —AF
As both a kindergarten teacher and a mother of a child who attended Young Fives, I’ve had the unique opportunity to see its benefits up close. In the classroom, I notice a clear difference in students who come from Young Fives. These children enter kindergarten familiar with the routines, structure, and expectations of school life, which gives them a big head start. They arrive socially and emotionally ready, able to manage group interactions, follow instructions, and handle challenges with more resilience. Academically, they often begin the year with a strong foundation that helps them engage more confidently and independently. —AJ

Schools of Choice FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Farmington Public School District an open-enrollment district?
No. The only exception would be those students participating in Section 105 Limited Schools of Choice. (See below #3) - Can a student pay tuition to attend Farmington Public Schools?
No. There are only two exceptions. One is for a student who is moving into the District within the semester of enrollment with a signed purchase agreement. The second applies to a student who has completed his or her junior year as a resident. The student may pay tuition to attend as a senior and graduate from the District. (See board procedure # 5118P) - What are the Farmington Public School of Choice options?
a) Intra-District Transfer is for residents of the Farmington Public School District only. Proof of residency is required.
b) Section 105 is a Limited Schools of Choice option for non-residents that fall under the auspices of the Oakland County ISD. Proof of residency is required.
All Schools of Choice options are determined by the Board of Education on an annual basis. - When is the application period?
The application period for Intra-District Transfer and Section 105 Limited Schools of Choice usually occurs in January and February each year. Please continue to check our website for updated information and deadlines. - How do I apply?
Applications are available online on the website www.farmington.k12.mi.us. They must be completed online and must be submitted by the deadline noted on the application. - What factors determine approval?
Placements are determined on an annual basis and based upon current building enrollment, projected enrollment, budget constraints, staffing allocations and number of requests. If requests exceed openings, a lottery will be held. - Is placement on a first come, first serve basis?
No. All applications are accepted until the deadline and all have an equal chance of placement based on the above criteria. If the number of applications received exceeds the number of openings, a lottery will be held. - Is Schools of Choice available at all levels?
Annually, the District assesses current and projected building enrollment along with budget constraints and staffing allocations to determine if a building or grade level will be open or closed to all incoming Schools of Choice students, including siblings of students already in attendance. - Is there sibling preference?
For Intra-District Transfer, sibling preference exists ONLY if two siblings are in attendance at the same school at the same time and the building is open as an Intra-District Transfer option. If there are more sibling requests than space permits, a lottery will be held. For Section 105 Limited Schools of Choice, sibling preference exists if two siblings are in attendance in the District at the same time and a building is open as a Section 105 Limited Schools of Choice option. If there are more sibling requests than space permits, a lottery will be held. - What is the order of placement?
Intra-District Transfer applicants are placed first, followed by enrollment of District employees’ non-resident children via PA 227. Section 105 Limited Schools of Choice students are placed last, when that particular choice option is opened by the Board. - Will my child receive transportation?
Transportation is not provided for Schools of Choice students. - Will Schools of Choice guarantee my child's path through all subsequent levels? For Internal Transfer families, after completion of any given level (i.e., elementary or middle), you must apply for the next level. Incoming PA 227 District Employees’ children and Section 105 Limited Schools of Choice students will be assigned the school feeder path(s) per level of enrollment. Where more than one path exists, the administrative office responsible for PA 227 and Section 105 will determine the path based upon current building enrollment, projected enrollment, budget constraints, and staffing.
- What if my child wants to go back to his/her home school? (Internal Transfers only)
It is desirable that a student who transfers pursuant to the Schools of Choice program remain at the selected school for that educational level (i.e., elementary, middle, or high). However, upon request, a Schools of Choice student will be allowed to return to their home school (at the beginning of the next school year). Once returned to their home school, a student is ineligible to apply for Schools of Choice at that level again. - If I am participating in the Section 105 Limited Schools of Choice option, and I move out of Oakland County, can my child continue to attend Farmington Public Schools?
Yes. Your child may remain enrolled through graduation from high school. - If I was a resident of the Farmington Public School District, but I move out of the District, could I participate in Schools of Choice?
If the following criteria are met, you may participate in Section 105 Limited Schools of Choice during the two-week application period.
a) You have moved within the Oakland County ISD.
b) The District has opened Section 105 Limited Schools of Choice in the building and/or grade level you require for the following year.
