School Nurses

School nurses play an important role in supporting the health, safety, and success of every student. They are often the first line of care in our schools, helping students manage a wide range of physical and mental health needs—from everyday concerns like allergies and asthma to more complex conditions such as diabetes, seizures, concussions, and anxiety. By caring for the whole child, school nurses help ensure students are healthy, present, and ready to learn.

Beyond direct care, school nurses work closely with families, staff, and healthcare providers to remove health-related barriers that can impact attendance and learning. They help develop and support Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), 504 plans, and individualized care plans, making sure each student receives the support they need throughout the school day. Their work is centered on coordination, communication, and advocacy for every child.

School nurses also play a key role in keeping our entire school community safe and informed. They train staff on health and safety protocols, oversee the safe administration of medications and treatments, and ensure schools are prepared to respond to emergencies. In addition, they support public health efforts by helping prevent and respond to communicable illnesses and promoting overall wellness across the district.

From daily care to long-term planning, school nurses are essential partners in creating a safe, supportive, and healthy learning environment for all students.
