To have a personal curriculum PC outside of the MMC in Michigan, a student or their parent/guardian must initiate the process by requesting a PC from the high school principal or counselor. This request is then reviewed by a PC team, which includes the student, parent/guardian, and a counselor or teacher, to determine if modifications to the MMC are appropriate.

1. A parent or guardian, an emancipated student, or school personnel can request a PC. 
2. A PC team is formed, typically including the student, parent/guardian, and a counselor or teacher. 
3. The PC team reviews the student's academic records, performance data, and any existing support systems (like an EDP or IEP). 
4. If the team determines a PC is appropriate, they develop a personalized plan that modifies the MMC while still meeting graduation requirements. 
5. The PC plan must be approved by the district superintendent or their designee. 
6. Once approved, the PC is implemented, allowing the student to pursue a personalized course of study. 
7. Upon completing the PC, the student receives a Michigan high school diploma. 

The PC is typically a final resort option and must meet stringent requirements for determining educational goals and evaluating student progress.

Some important considerations for parents, guardians, and students to keep in mind:

• A PC is not a way to avoid difficult courses or to help a student graduate at the last minute. 
• The PC must align with the student's educational development plan (EDP) and, if applicable, their Individualized Education Program (IEP). 
• The PC team must ensure that any modifications to the MMC are consistent with state and district policies. 
• While PC modifications are possible for students with and without disabilities, they can be particularly helpful for students with IEPs. 
• PC modifications may limit a student's ability to be admitted to certain colleges or universities or to participate in NCAA athletic programs.
