Middle School Experience
The Middle School Experience at Farmington Public Schools
Where students are seen, supported, and challenged to grow
Relationships First. Always.
Middle school is a big shift—from one classroom and one teacher to many. That’s why we use a teaming model: groups of teachers work with the same group of students, creating a close-knit environment where kids feel known and supported.
The teachers at FPS are experts at what they do, but just as importantly, they’re experts in building strong, meaningful relationships.
Learning That Feels Real
Middle schoolers are naturally curious. At FPS, we tap into that by giving students chances to explore real-world topics, solve problems that matter, and connect their learning to things they care about.
Students dive into:
- Hands-on projects that make learning active and meaningful
- Time built into the schedule for social-emotional learning, academic support, and deeper project work
- Career exploration and community connections that help students see the bigger picture—and where they might fit into it
A Well-Rounded Experience
We believe every student deserves a chance to discover what they’re passionate about. That’s why we offer a wide range of opportunities in and out of the classroom.
- A 1:1 tech environment where students use digital tools to collaborate, create, and share their ideas
- STEM-focused electives taught in tech labs with hands-on learning
- Fine and performing arts available at every grade level, so students can express themselves through music, art, drama, and more
Curriculum That Makes Sense
We use trusted programs that give all students access to high-quality, grade-level learning, with space for creativity and critical thinking:
- Illustrative Math – a student-first approach that makes math accessible and engaging
- MISTAR Science – every unit starts with a real-world question that drives curiosity
- Michigan ELA Units – powerful, diverse texts that help students grow as readers, writers, and thinkers
- Michigan Citizenship Collaborative Curriculum – learning history and current events by asking questions and exploring real sources
Growing Lifelong Learners
We want our students to leave middle school with more than just knowledge—we want them to leave with confidence, purpose, and a sense of who they are. Everything we do is grounded in FPS’s Profile of a Lifelong Learner, which guides students to become curious thinkers, problem-solvers, compassionate teammates, great communicators, and so much more.
Middle school may be a time of change, but at Farmington Public Schools, it’s also a time of discovery, growth, and connection. And we’re here to make sure every student feels supported along the way.
