This course will focus on health science standards and introduce students to the knowledge and skills required of future healthcare professionals and healthcare consumers. Students will be introduced to basic patient care skills and an understanding of health care systems, communication, medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, legal and ethical issues, safety, infection control principles, and basic emergency procedures while exploring healthcare careers and developing employability skills. Medical Skills Field Study | 06522 | |
This one-semester course, taken along with Medical Terminology during the same semester, is designed to provide practical application to the concepts learned in Medical Skills A&B and introduce students to new skills required of entry-level healthcare professionals, including mastery of vital signs, assisting with activities of daily living, moving, turning, ambulating and positioning patients, laboratory and diagnostic procedures, such as, EKG and phlebotomy. Students will apply these skills through simulations and/or real-world experiences in the healthcare setting in preparation for college and career readiness as a future health professional. Students must arrange their own transportation to and from the off-site healthcare facility. Students may be required to show evidence of immunizations, a negative TB screen, a criminal background check, and a drug screen, in addition to other healthcare facility requirements. Students in this one-semester course will learn knowledge and skills necessary in an emergency to help sustain life, reduce pain and minimize consequences of injury or sudden illness until more advanced medical help is available. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) | 6530A / 6530B | |
This two-semester course is designed to prepare students to provide care and treatment for critically ill and injured patients. Students will acquire knowledge and skills in the field of emergency care, such as patient assessment, trauma assessment, vital signs, splinting/backboarding, bandaging, airway management, medication administration and treatment of burns and shock. COURSE NOTE: EMT Application/Teacher Recommendation Form
Students will be required to show evidence of immunizations, a negative TB screen, must be able to lift 50 pounds, pass a physical exam, criminal background check and a drug screen, in addition to other healthcare facility requirements for clinical experience. Students will also be required to provide their own transportation to clinical sites no later than the beginning of second semester. Upon successful completion of this course, students may be eligible for the National Registry Exam for EMT licensure which requires the completion of unpaid clinical hours at designated sites after school. Eligibility for the National Registry Exam for EMT licensure consists of completion of 32 clinical hours, being 16 years of age upon completion of this course, pass this course with an 80% or better. This course is authorized as part of a MI state-approved CTE program and is a related course for health science work-based learning experiences. |
