McKinney Vento- Homeless And Foster Care Student Support

McKinney-Vento (Homeless) Student Services

Students and families who lack fixed, regular, or adequate housing due to eviction, family conflict, natural disaster, or other reasons related to economic hardship are eligible for services provided by Farmington Public Schools as required by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. District services address the specific challenges that students experiencing residential transitions may face in enrolling, attending, and participating fully in school. The goal is to promote school stability and success for all students.
 

Foster Student Services

The Every Student Achieves Act provides all children and youth in foster care with core protections for school stability and school access through a statutory vehicle that is separate from the McKinney-Vento Act, and that outlines clear, distinct, and appropriate responsibilities for both the education and child welfare agencies. These amendments will remedy the significant challenges in implementing the McKinney-Vento Act for children and youth in foster care and build on the legislative foundation provided by the Fostering Connections to Success and Increasing Adoptions Act.

If your family lives in any of the following situations your school-age children may qualify for certain rights and protections under the federal McKinney-Vento Act:

  • In a shelter In a motel or campground due to the lack of an alternative adequate accommodation

  • In a car, park, abandoned building, or bus or train station 

  • Doubled up with other people due to loss of housing or economic hardship

  • Unaccompanied youth includes youth, not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian

Once identified, students in the McKinney Vento program are eligible for educational services that remove barriers and support achievement. These include:

  • Immediate or continued enrollment in school

  • Transportation assistance (if applicable)

  • Free school meals

  • Academic support/recovery, school supplies and other resources

  • Fee waivers (for some FPS programs)

  • Referrals to educational and community services
