Real World Relevance for your FPS Student
Career and Technical Education at FPS = A Career-Focused Education = Employability = High Skill, High Demand, High Wage
A Career-Focused Education provides a learning system that guides students in making informed career preparation decisions, developing the skills and knowledge – academic, technical and workplace – needed to be successful in a chosen career, and preparing them to compete effectively in the job market.
Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs change and evolve to better serve our country’s needs. In addition to preparing students to help drive industry success, CTE creates an educational environment that integrates core academics with real-world relevance.
Other KEY Components of a Career and Technical Education Program
Work-Based Learning - Work-Based Learning is a structured method of instruction whereby students coordinate their high school studies with a job in a field related to their academic or occupational objectives. Students and participating businesses develop written training and evaluation plans to guide instruction, and students receive course credit for both their classroom and work experiences and are compensated for their work time.
Tech Prep - Tech Prep is the name given to programs that offer at least four years of sequential coursework at the secondary and post-secondary levels to prepare students for technical careers. Programs typically begin in eleventh grade and result in an award of an associate's degree or certificate after two years of post-secondary training. Other Tech Prep combinations are also available, depending on local consortium arrangements. Tech Prep is designed to build student competency in academic subjects and to provide broad technical preparation in a career area. Coursework integrates academic and vocational subject matter and may provide opportunities for dual enrollment in academic and vocational courses at secondary and post-secondary institutions.
CTE Earns You College Credit
Articulation agreements between FPS CTE programs and Oakland Community College enable students to receive college credits and take college-level courses while still in high school. Students receive advanced placement college credit for satisfactory completion of identified high school technical coursework. This program leads to an associate degree or two-year certificate in a technical area with the option of further study at a four-year postsecondary institution or entry into the job market.
