  • Medical Skills A 06510A
    Medical Skills A/B will focus on the health science standards and introduce students to the knowledge and skills required of professionals in the healthcare field. Students will build a foundation of basic patient care skills and an understanding of health care systems, communication, medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, legal and ethical issues, safety and infection control principles. **Pathway: Health Sciences
    COURSE NOTE: Combine with completion of 06510B - Medical Skills B to complete the state-approved formal CTE program for 1.0 exchange credit in Science or World Language or Visual, Performing & Applied Arts.
    Upon completion of this course and 06510B- Marketing B, students will take the National Health Science Exam to demonstrate proficiency of course content. A certificate is awarded to students passing with a score of 70% or better which may be useful when seeking entry level employment in a healthcare facility or applying to college programs.

    Medical Skills B 06510B
    Students will learn about various health occupations, employability skill and job opportunities in health fields. Students will also learn basic patient care skills, medical terminology, abbreviations, basic human anatomy and physiology, and various disease processes including sexually transmitted diseases. Students may be certified in CPR and first aid. **Pathway: Health Sciences

    Medical Terminology 06520
    This course is a two-hour block course taken along with Medical Skills Field Study.  Students will learn medical terminology, medical abbreviations, human anatomy and physiology, and specific disease processes. **Pathway: Health Sciences
    COURSE NOTE: This course must be taken concurrently with 06522 - Medical Skills Field Study and with teacher approval. Upon successful completion of this course, students are eligible for 3.0 articulated college credits through Oakland Community College.

    Medical Skills Field Study 06522
    This course is a two-hour block course taken along with Medical Terminology.  This course is designed to provide practical application to many of the concepts learned in Medical Skills A&B and introduce students to new skills required of healthcare professionals. Students will gain experience in a healthcare facility to enrich their knowledge of skills required for careers in the Health Science pathway. **Pathway: Health Sciences

    COURSE NOTE: NF Required Form

    This class must be taken concurrently with 06520 - Medical Terminology and with teacher approval. Students must arrange their own transportation to and from the off-site healthcare facility once rotations begin. Depending on site placement, a student may be required to show evidence of immunizations including the seasonal flu vaccine, a negative TB screen, a criminal background check, and a drug screen in addition to other healthcare facility requirements.

    Health Science Terminology 06523
    Seniors pursuing a career in Health Science will learn medical terminology, medical abbreviations, human anatomy and physiology, and specific disease processes. This course is for students who are unable to take the 2-hour block 06520 - Medical Skills Terminology and 06522 - Medical Skills Field Study.  This course is a related course for paid Health Science Work-Based Learning experiences (formerly Co-Op). Students should contact the CTE program teacher for more information. **Pathway: Health Sciences
    COURSE NOTE: This course is for students who are unable to take the 2-hour block Medical Skills Terminology 06520 and Medical Skills Field Study 06522. Requires Teacher Approval.  Upon successful completion of this course, students are eligible for 3.0 articulated college credits through Oakland Community College.

    Emergency Medical Responder 06521
    Students in this course will learn knowledge and skills necessary in an emergency to help sustain life, reduce pain and minimize consequences of injury or sudden illness until more advanced medical help is available. This course includes CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers certification and Emergency Medical Response certification.  **Pathway: Health Sciences
