The Interact International Club (a.k.a. Recycling Club) is busy making FHS “GREEN”. Not only do we gather and sort all recyclable materials every Tuesday after school, we make products from many of the items we collect; pop tabs and candy wrappers become trendy bracelets and old magazines become eye-catching waste baskets. We are earning money for recycling our paper and printer cartridges. We are earning points/products by recycling potato chip bags and drink pouches. We are learning how much trash is produced and how to reduce that amount. We are feeling good about doing what we can to make the most of our resources.
Students earn one hour of community service each week by participating with the group in gathering recyclables from the classrooms, copy rooms, offices, and special student-made bins throughout the building.
Current international project: We're fundraising to help a school in the Monterrey, Mexico area (details forthcoming). We also went Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF. Over thirty club members participated and together we donated $461.90 to UNICEF.
Last year’s international project: The club’s focus for ‘09-‘10 was to provide scholarship money ($300) for needy families and help purchase books ($200) for a school being built by Building Tomorrow in the Kigoba district of Uganda.
Here’s how everyone can help:
- Save your pop tabs and send them in to the office
- Join CokeRewards and donate your points to FHS or send in your qualifying pop caps with codes.
- Send in your used ink cartridges (not the “refillable” type)
- Send in your old cell phones
- Send in your empty juice pouches (without straws)
